From Military Service to Civic Leadership

Second Service is an initiative dedicated to preparing American veterans for leadership in public life. Inspired by the long tradition of citizen-soldiers in the United States, the program explores how military experience can cultivate the virtues, judgment, and sense of duty necessary for democratic leadership.

From George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant to Dwight D. Eisenhower and contemporary veteran-leaders, Americans who first served in uniform have long shaped the nation’s civic and political institutions. Second Service seeks to study that tradition, preserve it, and renew it for a new generation.

Our Mission

Second Service equips veterans and active-duty service members for meaningful participation in American civic and political life through:

• Civic and constitutional education

Why It Matters

Military service develops qualities essential to self-government: discipline, sacrifice, prudence, courage, and commitment to a cause greater than oneself. Yet many veterans interested in public leadership lack clear pathways into civic institutions, public administration, elected office, or policy work.
